"Looking Up" by Tom Friedman.

33-Foot-Tall Humanoid

Field review by the editors.

Austin, Texas

Artist Tom Friedman crafted his 33-ft. tall figure to appear as if made of mashed up aluminum foil roasting pans. The roasting pan giant, titled "Looking Up," was unveiled in May 2015 on the grounds of Laguna Gloria, a sculpture park usually open to the public (we wandered in during set-up for a private event, but they let us snap a few quick pics). The clown-footed giant gazes skyward, as if he's waiting for other elongated guests to drop in and join him on the lawn.

Friedman's sculptures often incorporate society's cast-offs as construction materials. The roasting pans are initially wrapped around a styrofoam core; by the end of Friedman's process all of the foil and foam has been replaced by stainless steel. According to The Contemporary Austin, "Looking Up" is Friedman's nod of sorts to modernist sculptor Alberto Giacometti, known for his own stretched out humanoids.
